Job Description Summary
Protects the lives and property of the citizens of the community and provides for their welfare through crime prevention activities and aggressive enforcement of laws and ordinances. Volume of work varies from day to day and hour to hour depending upon the number and type of calls, number and type of offenses observed, number of officers on duty and receipt of any special assignments.

Job Duties

  1. Patrols assigned area(s) by car and/or on foot to observe and discourage crime. Observes law violations and takes appropriate action.
  2. Initiates and assists with criminal investigations with other Police Department Divisions and law enforcement agencies.
  3. Directs traffic as necessary, issues citations and investigates accidents.
  4. Testifies in court; serves criminal papers; guards and transports prisoners.
  5. Maintains vehicle and personal equipment; makes arrangements for necessary repairs/replacements.
  6. Responds to routine and emergency calls to include disturbances, burglaries, prowlers, suspicious persons, traffic accidents, medical and/or psychological crises etc., and takes appropriate action.
  7. Prepares patrol reports, offense reports, and arrest reports.
  8. Gives advice to citizens concerning laws and ordinances.
  9. Attends in-service and special schools as well as engaging in off-duty study in order to maintain up-to-date knowledge of and skill in law enforcement activities.
  10. Addresses and works with community groups to promote good public relations and to inform citizens of police activities, crime prevention programs and techniques, and safety procedures.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience
Education:
High School Diploma; OR G.E.D. certification; OR proof of completed college degree from an accredited college or university. Higher education level is desirable.

Experience:
Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Basic Certification (TCOLE) or other State Certification.

Certification:
Valid Texas "C" Driver License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must know existing municipal, criminal, and traffic codes and be prepared for violence directed at self or others at all times. Must have working knowledge of life saving and rescue procedures, general pharmacology, firearms, self defense, crowd control, and verbal control to diffuse potentially hostile situations. Maintains a working knowledge of social service agencies programs and referral procedures. Must be always mindful of highly visible image to community, both on and off duty. Maintains personal appearance. Ability to make quick and accurate decisions. Maintains physical/mental ability to handle stressful situations.

Special Requirements:

Candidates must comply with TCOLE licensing exam requirements prior to application with the City of Odessa
Skills Testing and Other Pre-Employment Requirements:
This position requires a written verification by the Texas Commission including successful completion of the Texas licensing exam. An applicant must not have twice failed any part of the application process in the 12 months prior to the closing of the job posting. Must pass the following selection criteria: Oral Interview, Physical, Psychological, Polygraph, Vision, Background Investigation, Physical Agility Test, Drug Screen, and Medical Physical.
